Still Life of One Minute

Still Life of One Minute

bent hourglass

An hourglass is a powerful symbol for the passing of time, a memento mori that reminds the viewer of mortality. For this work, Nuyten investigated at which temperature the glass melts and is deformed. It was the first time she experimented with glass, and it took many broken hourglasses before she managed to achieve the intended result. Gravity no longer has a hold on the grains of sand, and, as a result, it seems as if time has coagulated.
