Let’s Meet at 3 O’Clock
modified wrist watches, Ø 3.4 cm
In close collaboration with a self-proclaimed ‘clock doctor’, Nuyten developed a wristwatch that runs faster than standard time. For this, the clock doctor did something completely counterintuitive: manipulating the clock in such a way that it lost its most important function. Instead of the ‘right’ time, its hands now indicate a private time zone. In this way, Nuyten emphasises the arbitrariness of units of measure that determine our lives, such as seconds, minutes, and hours. The wearers of the watches potentially form a secret society together. They can meet each other at three o’clock: a simple appointment for them, an enigma for the rest of the world. In 2018, at the invitation of ICA Richmond, Nuyten performed a version with 100 watches, worn by the visitors to the museum.
