egg-tempera of pigment from Ericsson T20 and iPhone s4 on canvas 80 x 60 cm

For centuries, artists have known how hard it is to create black paint. For these paintings, Nuyten developed a contemporary recipe. She arranged for discarded smartphones to be shredded and then ground the remains to a powder in a coffee grinder. She mixed this powder with egg and oil to obtain tempera, a quick-drying and durable type of paint. The tiny fragments of silver, which make the canvas resemble a star system, were also derived from the telephones.
