Gravitational Screen
melted screens
We all know a screen is made of glass, and glass is made of sand (next to calcium and more). Without these elements we would never have managed to make screens as we have them now. Gravitational Screen is an outcome of a research and experiment with the materiality of screens, as well as one of the basic elements on earth which doesn't exist in the digital world: gravity.
Nuyten and a glassblower conducted research and experiments with heat and gravity, from melting screens such as iPads and iPhones. In the National Glassmuseum Leerdam, the team found a way to melt the glass from these screens, and blow it into Gravitational Screen. By unpacking, measuring and mapping the materiality of this digital world, Nuyten reminds us of the material essence of these manufactured everyday objects.
