A 50°C Horizon
two thermometers of 50ºC, 60 x 4 cm
Two glass thermometers have been mounted on the wall in a horizontal line. The horizon mentioned in the title manifests itself the moment the red mercury in the thermometers expands so much that a continuous line emerges. When Nuyten made the work, she didn’t assume it was likely that the work would ever actually be 50 degrees Celsius or warmer. For the time being, the horizon only exists in the text of the title and in the viewer’s imagination. However, extreme temperatures are increasingly common. If the work is installed in an attic room or in a windless spot in the blazing sun, it is quite likely, on a hot summer day, that the horizon mentioned in the title will really appear.
